Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an ode to the traditional sextet style and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate and less cloned previously recorded efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album a few months later, and went on a tour around the world to promote it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the first album in the band's history not to include a single song with the word "A" in its title and it included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and singer Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis condition that limited his singing abilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally restructuring the band. This lineup, minus Howe who was occupied with Yes at the time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
