Before Toto was formed The members of the band did session work for other musicians. Drummer Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate, and keyboardist David Paich (the son of session drummer Marty Paich and brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro) played on Boz Scaggs 1975 album Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in the year 1976 as a result of the collaboration.

Turn Back, Toto's third studio album was criticized by critics for not having hit singles. In 1985 the singer Fergie Frederiksen resigned from the group, and the band held auditions to find a new frontman. Guitarist Steve Lukather was chosen, and the band recorded the album Fahrenheit in 1986.
