The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure the next generation could read the words. Many words were replaced with foreign words. For instance, dui, which is Bengali for verandah, was used.
Origins
The early history of Toto that began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's economic growth. In the first half of 1917, Toto made products to meet the growing demand for modern, brand new urban housing. To accomplish this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding internationally in the late 1980s to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. It launched the Cera Trading Company, importing and distributing other products from other manufacturers to complement its own range of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy helped increase sales and expanded the firm's global market share.
In the 90s, Toto began to focus on research and development of water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better serve the needs of customers and to increase profits. The company implemented a just-in-time method of managing supply chains and used the same methodology for its sales process. This resulted in a greater level of customer satisfaction.
Toto has continued to innovate on the toilet technology. The most recent toilet features an environmentally friendly, powerful tornado flush. You might expect a band with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock band, but it is actually a relatively straightforward rock band. The band was initially four members and released two albums that were self-titled in 1979 and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest breakthrough came in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster, however it did not come without its share of problems. The record companies put Toto under pressure to deliver an album that was a success or else they would pull the album. Toto was able achieve this through the aid of the hit song "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experience. Before joining the group, the members worked as session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write fantastic AOR songs that slowly get their hooks into you. The album also contains slow, jazzier tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and distorted AOR, which should seem like a complete blunder, but works very well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes changed towards the negative. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career, and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album is a return to a classic sextet structure and a more consistent, stronger album with a sharper edge. Its edgier sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on earlier efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded their Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a brand new studio album a few months later, and went on a tour around the world to support the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded before. It was completed as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band that did not include any single song that had the word "A" in its title and it included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which restricted his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes along with the other original members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the band. This lineup, with the exception of Howe (who was working with Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
